For over 20 years, Tanya has traveled and worked in a variety of foreign places from London to Wyoming to Portland to San Francisco, and has studied yoga with many respected teachers. In 2005 she met her teacher, Yogarupa Rod Stryker, and has been initiated into the 5000+ year old Himalayan tradition that includes the lineage of master teachers such as Swami Rama, Pandit Rajmani Tigunait, and Bengali Baba. Yogarupa’s style of yoga, known as ParaYoga, blends the three rivers of Tantra Hatha Yoga, Ayurveda and the sacred texts such as the Yoga Sutras into one comprehensive study.
Through this wisdom, Tanya specializes in helping students create a holistic practice based on their physical, energetic, mental, emotional and spiritual needs. She continues to study under Rod, Pandijit, Rolf Sovik, Indu Arora, and many other teachers channeling the sacred tradition of yoga, tantra and meditation.
Tanya blends her studies of Tantra Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga, Iyengar and Vinyasa Flow in each class. Focus is on aligning the physical with the subtle by using breath, awareness, alignment, and ancient yoga techniques including meditation, pranayama, kriya, bandha, chakra work, mudra, and mantra. She also strives to help students uncover their highest potential though tapas (purification & discipline), stiram (steadiness in body/mind) andsukham (maintaining a healthy sense of humor or ease during practice).
As a Four Desires Certified Trainer, Tanya has been groovin’ on the Four Desires under her teacher, Yogarupa, since 2006. Deeply touched by the wealth of wisdom and clarity it brings, she offers this rich study in her Advanced 340hr Teacher Training as well as in weekend workshops, retreats, and individual private as well as small group sessions.
In her private yoga sessions, her focus with students is to help them find their Sva Dharma, or (individual destiny) through use of Yoga Therapy* and Ayurvedic principles, Vinyasa Krama (proper sequencing), tapas (discipline), smarana (rememberance of the self) as well as mantra and meditation practices.
She completed her 500 hour Yoga Alliance teaching credentials through ParaYoga® and is one of the first ParaYoga Level III Certified Teachers in the world. Her 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training was completed in 2001 through the It’s Yoga Ashtanga Teacher Training Program in San Francisco with Larry Schultz. Tanya also has several teacher training certificates in Prenatal Yoga, plus a wide variety of other teacher trainings from many other recognized teachers including Indu Arora, Dharma Mittra, Judith Lasater, Paul Grilley, Seane Corn, Tias Little, David Swenson, Doug Swenson and more.
Tanya, a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner, is also a certified Reiki & Seichem Practitioner (Seichem combines the energies of five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and ether). Her training in Healing Touch is endorsed by the American Holistic Nurses’ Association. For continuing study, Tanya has trained in Qi Gong with Master Chunyi Lin. She teachers her Reiki Master Program here at Devanadi and is accepting new students.
Tanya holds Instructor status with Thai Healing Alliance International (THAI) and is honored to serve on their Executive Council. She is a senior student of Master Teacher (Ajahn) Pichest Boonethame of Chiang Mai, Thailand, and other respected teachers such as Ohm Rinraya, Bob Haddad, Homprang, in the field, at home and abroad. Tanya visits Thailand annually where she continues her study of Thai Massage, as well as Buddhist meditation, Thai Shamanic Healing techniques, traditional Thai herbal and medical practices, and other cultural delights. Her first certification in Thai Massage came from Jonas Westring of Shantaya Healing Arts.
Motivated to help expand the knowledge of the traditional practices of hands-on-healing through bodywork, Tanya has been teaching her Thai Yoga Bodywork Practitioner Certificate Program that merges Traditional Thai Massage with the subtler work of Energy Medicine since 2003 and is honored to have taught hundreds of students this ancient healing art.
Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda have been a long-time studies for Tanya who learned about it in her early days of yoga. Since then, she has connected not only with the Thai Ayurvedic ways of healing but has continued her study in the Sevanti Ayurveda Wellness Counselor Program (AWCP) as well as the Himalayan Institute’s Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist (AYS) Training. She has completed HI’s Torchbearer/Advanced AYS studies and has served as an Himalayan Institute Adjunct Faculty Teacher. Tanya completed her Advanced Yoga Therapy Program* through YogSadhana with Indu Arora, and focuses on women’s health, stress/anxiety/depression, and other conditions. She is a Certified Yoga Therapist with the International Association of Yoga Therapists. When she’s not upside down in Pincha Mayurasana, she’s usually talking about vata-derangement with like-minded students and craving a homemade chai!
